Frank Lampard has confirmed that Chelsea right-back Reece James has been sent for further scans on his hamstring injury after pulling up in his attempted return to training.

James has been out of action since April but was never officially ruled out for the rest of the season, and the defender was back in training earlier this week ahead of a potential return on the final day against Newcastle.

Unfortunately, his training session did not last long as James pulled up with pain in the same hamstring, and he has now been sent back to the treatment room.

"He came out [to train] yesterday but went back in, because he had a little bit of awareness [of the injury]," Lampard told the Evening Standard. "We hope the scan will show there's no real damage."

James also confirmed the news, vowing to be back in time to write a different story next season.

"I'm sure you've seen the news," he wrote to fans on Instagram. "I won't be back for the last Game.

"It's been tough for me. I'm sorry this season hasn't gone as we wanted. Next season I'll be back stronger than ever, and we'll be back fighting for trophies!"

James is one of many Chelsea stars currently on the sidelines, with Lampard also having to make do without Ben Chilwell, Mason Mount, Armando Broja, Marc Cucurella, N'Golo Kante, Mateo Kovacic, Marcus Bettinelli and Benoit Badiashile.

The 23-year-old has struggled with injuries this season but will be aided by the summer arrival of Malo Gusto from Lyon.

Gusto, 20, was signed in January but loaned back to the French side for the remainder of the current campaign.
