Celtic’s pursuit of Wolves’ Hugo Bueno has come to an unexpected end, but not in the way the club or its fans might have hoped. The Hoops had been linked with the 21-year-old left-back for weeks, sparking hopes that a deal could be in the works to bolster a squad still lacking in key areas. But as the transfer window inches towards its close, the outcome isn’t what many had anticipated.

Celtic made their interest known as early as January, with the club reportedly eager to secure Bueno on loan as they look to strengthen their options at the back. With a promising young talent like Bueno available, it seemed like a potential win-win. The Bhoys, however, are no strangers to seeing potential deals slip through their fingers, and this one joins the pile.

In a move that has surprised some, Hugo will be heading to Feyenoord on a season-long loan [Express and Star]. The Dutch side, fresh off their own domestic successes, have snapped up the Spaniard for the upcoming campaign. This loan deal, however, comes with a notable caveat—there is no option to buy at the end of it. For Bueno, it’s a fantastic opportunity to gain regular playing time and comPete in the Champions League, but it’s a scenario that Celtic might have been wary of.

This situation brings to mind Celtic’s ongoing experience with Adam Idah. The prospect of watching a player shine only to see his price tag soar out of reach is a risk the Hoops have encountered before. It’s perhaps little surprise then that a deal never materialised.

Celtic’s finances are in a strong position, buoyed by a substantial Champions League windfall that includes an additional home gate thanks to the comPetition’s new format. But money in the bank doesn’t translate into points on the pitch, and the need for reinforcements is growing more urgent by the day.
