Brendan Rodgers Shares Witty Remark After “Brilliant” Callum McGregor’s Scotland Retirement
Brendan Rodgers was in high spirits this afternoon following Celtic’s 2-0 win over Hibernian at Easter Road.
The Irishman clearly enjoyed what he saw from the Hoops and, when questioned post-match about Callum McGregor’s wonder strike and the Celtic skipper’s decision to retire from international Football this week, he was quick to lighten the mood with a witty remark.
Rodgers said: (Daily Record), “He (McGregor) was brilliant. That’s what happens when you retire from Scotland! I do feel for Steve because he’s a quality player, of course.
“But from a Celtic perspective, for longevity, for him, his career, his recovery. There’s so many Games now, it’s a 12-month season. For him to get these little periods of recovery, to recover and rest, will be important for him. He got no winter break this year either.
“He’s played so many Games, hasn’t he? I think when I give Cal a few days off on international breaks, he’ll relish it. I think he’s getting into his stage of his career.
“He’s such an intense player for me on and off the pitch. Those little windows where you can give him that breather will do him the word of good.”
Despite some criticism at stages last season, Rodgers has really come into his own over the past six months, with his sense of humor and character shining through.
With Callum McGregor, he has a player he knows well and will be delighted to give him time to rest and recover during international breaks.
Rodgers’ second spell at the club seems to have only just begun, with a league and cup double last season that poses a daunting prospect for the rest of Scottish Football.
Now that the Irishman is settled in, he’ll be looking to take the team to the next level in the coming weeks in the transfer market.
