Brendan Rodgers Faces Key Decision as Midfielder Pushes for Celtic Extension
Celtic stalwart James Forrest has expressed his desire to extend his stay at the club, with his current contract set to expire next summer.
The 33-year-old winger, who has been with Celtic his entire career, enjoyed a resurgence in the latter stages of last season, which saw him earn a Scotland recall ahead of Euro 2024.
Forrest, speaking about his future, told SunSport: “I feel as if I’ve still got a part to play and I still love it. Celtic is such a massive club and I’ve been here my whole career. I’d love to stay on and that will maybe come into discussion at some point. I’m not sure when.”
The winger spent much of last season on the fringes but made a notable return to form towards the campaign’s close, helping Celtic secure a domestic Double. This late-season impact brought his total trophy haul with the club to an impressive 24, putting him within touching distance of Lisbon Lion Bobby Lennox’s record of 25. Forrest now has his sights set on breaking that record this season.
Reflecting on his recent run of form, Forrest added: “The end of last season was really good. It was a few months when I really enjoyed my Football. I’ve really enjoyed the start of this season as well. Obviously I’m getting older, but I really enjoy it.”
Forrest’s longevity at Celtic, coupled with his ambition to continue contributing, suggests he still has plenty to offer Brendan Rodgers’ side. “I got a good run at the end of last season and I’m feeling good again,” he said. “I’ve not even thought about stopping, to be honest. I’m just enjoying playing again.”
Whether he will be offered a new contract remains to be seen, but Forrest certainly won’t be looking for anything handed to him based on loyalty alone. The winger will want to earn his place in the squad on merit, continuing a Celtic career that has seen him become an incredible servant to the club.
