Preakness Stakes 2023 Horses and Runner-by-Runner Guide

There are 7 horses declared to run in the Preakness Stakes, which is Race 13 on the Saturday card at Pimlico. Former second favorite First Mission was scratched from the field on Friday due to an injury, which saw Mage’s odds cut from 8/5 to 8/11. Below is the name and number of each horse, as well as a quick guide to how they might perform from our Horse Racing expert.

1 National Treasure
National Treasure ran well for a 3rd place at last year’s Breeders’ Cup meeting, paying for a premature move when blinkered. The Quality Road colt was only 4th in April’s 1m1f Grade 1 Santa Anita Derby, getting outpaced at a crucial point before keeping on, but had missed some time beforehand including an intended start in March. He has worked well since, and shapes like he’ll benefit from refitted blinkers. His trainer, Bob Baffert, has won this race 7 times.

2 Chase The Chaos
A 1m1f all-weather stakes winner, but this gelding was well beaten in his last 2 starts on dirt and an AW surface, and there is no evidence that he’s up to this.

3 Mage
Mage gets behind in his races, but has a good surge and built on his earlier promise when winning the 1m2f Grade 1 Kentucky Derby, helped by a strong pace. This race probably won’t be run at such a fast tempo, but he did win his maiden from the front so may be more handily placed this time if he is able to get organised early and, having had only 4 starts, he should have more to give.

4 Coffeewithchris

Coffeewithchris has 2 wins in non-Graded stakes company going 7f-1m at Laurel and is probably better than he showed behind Perform over 1m1f there in his latest race, fading after facing pace pressure. He is not likely to be up to this test, though, and is off Lasix now.

5 Red Route One

Red Route One came from well back to win a minor 1m1f stakes race at Oaklawn in his latest run, but much more is needed to win this and he has come off Lasix.

6 Perform

Perform scored an off-the-pace win in a minor 1m1f stakes race at Laurel in his latest run, after which he was supplemented for this race for $150,000. Significantly more is needed now and he is another to have come off Lasix.

7 Blazing Sevens

Blazing Sevens won last year’s 1-mile Grade 1 Champagne on the slop at Aqueduct, but hasn’t progressed as expected, most recently 6l third in 1m1f Grade 1 Blue Grass at Keeneland; however, trainer has twice won this race, including last year, with horses who were beaten in Kentucky Derby preps and skipped Churchill Downs to come here fresh.

2023 Preakness States Picks, Predictions & Best Bets

There are 3 horses to seriously consider in this race. Kentucky Derby winner Mage is the sole runner from the Churchill Downs race, which was only 2 weeks ago, so he faces fresher rivals. He is still capable of being a major contender, but NATIONAL TREASURE is preferred. He didn’t qualify for the Kentucky Derby, as he missed an intended start in March due to a foot issue and could manage only 4th place in the Santa Anita Derby. Still, that wasn’t a bad run after an interrupted preparation and he looks likely to build on it now. He will have blinkers refitted, has the speed to make use of his rail draw, and is going for a trainer who has a strong record in this race. More is needed from Blazing Sevens, but his trainer has form in this race with horses of a similar profile.
